Utility chronicles achievement in new 2010 sustainability report

NEW ORLEANS – Entergy (NYSE: ETR) has released its 2010 sustainability report, Acting With Integrity, which highlights the company's environmental, social and economic performance.

"Our performance over the past 12 years demonstrates we are true to our word, and that means we back up our stated aspirations with actions," said J. Wayne Leonard, chairman and chief executive officer of Entergy.  "As we promised, we've acted with a concern for safety, the environment, communities, employees, customers and shareholders – each being integral to the whole at Entergy."

Some of the 2010 key achievements detailed in the sustainability report, which can be viewed at entergy.com/sustainability, include how Entergy:

  • Successfully completed its second voluntary commitment to stabilize greenhouse gas emissions at 20 percent below year 2000 levels. Since the first commitment in 2001, Entergy was able to beat its cumulative targets by more than 14 percent.
  • Increased financial assistance bill payments for low-income customers to $59 million, nearly a 16 percent jump from the previous year.
  • Contributed more than $16 million in charitable donations to non-profit agencies.
  • Reduced its hazardous waste generation by 50 percent from the previous year.

"Our business, just like life, is full of trade-offs.  You can't be in ten places at the same time.  So you make the best choices you can," said Leonard.  "In our business, choices involve costs and customers, who can ill afford it, see those costs in their bill.  It's a constant test of our will and commitment to our values to make choices and trade-offs that best serve all stakeholders.  The day you decide quarterly corporate profits supersedes everything else, is the day you have chosen a path to failure."

Videos that summarize many of Entergy's safety, environmental and societal accomplishments in 2010 were produced to introduce each section of the report.

"The sustainability report has made great strides and is evolving to better reach audiences who expect immediate access to the latest company information. The videos act as 'movie trailers' for each section to quickly engage the reader with key facts about our approach to sustainability," said Brent Dorsey, Entergy's director of corporate environmental programs. "We also expanded the scope and capabilities of the report this year to include a special section that focuses on the layers of safety at Entergy nuclear plants. And to specifically cater to our audiences 'on-the-go,' later this summer we will announce an added component that benefits all Entergy stakeholders," Dorsey said.

Entergy Corporation is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, and it is the second-largest nuclear generator in the United States. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.7 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Entergy has annual revenues of more than $11 billion and approximately 15,000 employees.
