Stay Safe as Summer Temperatures Climb

08/04/2017

It's summer, and throughout Entergy's service area, high temperatures are in full force.

Heat-related conditions - combined with physical activity, loss of fluids and fatigue - can lead to heat-related illnesses. Just like our workers at Entergy, members of the public should remain aware of the risks of high temperatures and take necessary precautions.

Factors that increase the risk of heat-related illness:

  • High temperature and humidity.
  • Radiant heat sources.
  • Contact with hot object.
  • Direct sun exposure.
  • Limited air movement.
  • Physical exertion.
  • Use of bulky or non-breathable protective clothing and equipment.

What can you do to prevent heat-related illnesses?

  • Stay hydrated! Drink water frequently.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable clothing if at all possible.
  • Take frequent short breaks in cool shade.
  • Eat smaller meals before work activity.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and large amounts of sugar.
  • Stay in the shade when possible.
  • Find out from your health care provider if your medications and heat don’t mix.

It’s important to know and look out for the symptoms of heat-related illness in yourself and others. Symptoms of heat stroke include confusion and an inability to think clearly. Those suffering from heat stroke may pass out, collapse, have seizures, or stop sweating.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency that may result in death. If you suspect that you are experiencing heat stroke, call 911 immediately. While waiting for help:

  • Stay in a shady, cool area.
  • Loosen clothing, remove outer clothing.
  • Wet the body with cool water.
  • Apply ice packs, cool compresses, and/or ice if available.
