Entergy to Hire Counsel to Lead Pro Bono Program

02/02/2018

Newly created pro bono counsel position will guide and expand company’s outreach to communities, including families and programs unable to afford important legal services

Low-income customers in Entergy Corp.’s utility territory in the Gulf South often need legal help they can’t afford, and the company’s legal organization has stepped up over the past five years to meet that need through pro bono work and other community service.

Now, the company is doubling down on that commitment by creating a new pro bono counsel role and conducting a national search to fill it.

“We’re looking for a highly motivated leader who will guide both strategic development and day-to-day execution of our pro bono program,” said Marcus Brown, executive vice president and general counsel for Entergy. “As the public face of our growing program, the pro bono counsel will promote relationships and influence policy among key external stakeholders in our communities and on state and national levels as well.”

Since 2012, the initiative launched by Brown has increased the commitment of company lawyers and paralegals to provide legal assistance to some of the most vulnerable citizens in Entergy’s utility service territory, which includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

The work hasn’t gone unnoticed. Among other awards, the department received the Corporate Pro Bono Organization’s 2016 Pro Bono Partner Award for its work with the Orleans Parish Civil District Court and the Louisiana Civil Justice Center in supporting the Self Help Resource Center, which assists thousands of unrepresented low-income and vulnerable domestic court litigants in the Greater New Orleans area.

Through the end of 2017, Entergy's 79-member legal department has provided more than 10,000 hours of pro bono services in our local communities.

The company aims to fill the pro bono counsel role as soon as possible, and invites qualified leaders to apply via its website.
